Where Will You Spend Eternity?

Have you ever thought about what happens next? Not next week. Not next year. After.

Most of us spend a lot of energy avoiding the thought. But somewhere quiet, late at night, at a funeral, or after a close call, it slips in anyway. You won't live forever. Neither will the people you love. And nobody is guaranteed their next heartbeat.

The Bible says that after this life comes eternity, and that eternity is spent in one of two places: heaven or hell. That's a heavy claim. If you're willing to sit with it honestly for a few minutes, we'd like to walk you through what the Bible actually says: not to scare you, but because if it's true, it's the most important thing you'll read today.

The gap between humanity and God caused by sin

Question 1: How can I be sure I'll go to heaven?

Jesus gave a direct answer: "Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." (John 3:3)

That phrase, "born again," is where we'll start.

Question 2: Why does Jesus say even "good" people need to be born again?

Try this. Have you ever told a lie, even a small one? Ever taken something that wasn't yours? Ever looked at someone with lust, or hated someone in your heart? Most of us, if we're honest, would say yes to at least one.

The Bible's standard isn't "better than average." It's perfection, because God is perfectly holy. "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23) That includes the religious, the moral, the kind, the churchgoing. All of us.

Man tries to bridge the gap through his own efforts but cannot reach God

Question 3: So what's the consequence?

"For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 6:23)

Two halves to that verse. The first is the bad news. The second is where everything changes.

Question 4: But I'm a fairly good person. Wouldn't a loving God grade on a curve?

This is where we have to be honest with ourselves. "If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:8–9)

The good news isn't that the standard got lower. It's that someone met it on your behalf.

Question 5: How can a loving God allow people to go to hell?

The Bible's answer is that God doesn't want anyone to perish. "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance." (2 Peter 3:9) Hell exists because a holy God cannot ignore sin and remain just. But He has made a way out, at enormous cost to Himself.

"Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it." (Matthew 7:14)

Question 6: If everyone has sinned, who can be saved?

Only someone without sin could pay the price for someone else's. That person is Jesus Christ, God Himself, who entered history roughly two thousand years ago, lived a sinless life, and was beaten and crucified to take the punishment we earned. Three days later, He rose from the dead, proving He had the authority to do exactly that.

Question 7: How do I receive that?

By turning from your sin (repentance), believing that Jesus died and rose for you, and personally asking Him to be your Lord and Savior. This is what "born again" means: the moment you stop relying on your own goodness and place your trust entirely in His.

If you've prayed something like this before but drifted, there's no harm in praying it again with full intention. God doesn't hold sincerity against anyone.

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me." (Revelation 3:20)

The Sinner's Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ,
I know that I am a sinner and that I cannot save myself.
I believe that You died on the cross for my sins and rose again from the dead.
Please forgive me of all my sins and wash me clean in Your precious blood.
I repent and turn away from my sin.
Come into my heart and into my life as my Lord and Saviour.
Help me to follow You, obey You, and live for You from this day forward.
Thank You for saving me and giving me eternal life.
In Jesus' Name I pray,
Amen.

Question 8: How can I know it's real?

"But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name." (John 1:12)

"That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved." (Romans 10:9)

It's not based on how you feel today. It's based on what He promised.

Question 9: Aren't all religions basically the same?

Jesus didn't leave that option open. "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (John 14:6) Either He was telling the truth or He wasn't, but He didn't claim to be one path among many.

Question 10: What now?

Two things matter most in the next 48 hours.

First, tell someone. Saying it out loud to a friend, a family member, or anyone makes it real and accountable. It takes courage. You may lose some friendships. You'll gain better ones.

Second, find a church this Sunday. Not eventually. This Sunday. A good local church is where you'll grow, be taught, be prayed for, and build the friendships that keep you walking when things get hard. If you don't know where to go, reach out to us and we'll help you find one near you.

Read the Gospel of John (fourth book of the New Testament), a chapter a day. Talk to God like He's listening, because He is. And expect resistance. The decision you just made matters, and not everyone will celebrate it.

We'd love to hear from you. See you in heaven.
